West Mugirango MP Steve Mogaka has urged Kisii University to reopen its stalled Nyamira Campus, lamenting the long delay in realising the county’s university dream.
While thanking President William Ruto for granting Nyamira the green light to host its institution of higher learning, Mogaka voiced frustration over the slow pace of implementation. Without naming names, he faulted a former top Education Cabinet Secretary—widely believed to be Dr. Fred Matiang’i—for closing the campus, which he termed as being for personal interests.
Calling on the Head of State to intervene, Mogaka appealed to the university management to revive the project, stating that it would ease educational costs and bring services closer to local students.
“The rooms and other facilities where Kisii University had started a branch are still lying there, let Kisii University come as soon as possible to revive it,” he said.
Deputy President Prof. Kithure Kindiki has reiterated the Kenya Kwanza government’s long-term plans for the country’s rapid development by supporting the growth of education as the primary stepping stone to development.
On his part, the Deputy President addressed the public at Nyamira Primary School in West Mugirango Constituency on Friday during a fundraising meeting for the empowerment of small business traders in Nyamira County.
“We have the interest of our people at heart from all parts of the country, and they need to live in peace and harmony as the government tries to serve them equitably,” he said.
He revealed that the government will employ 24,000 teachers in the country before the end of this year, bringing the total number of teachers employed by the government to 76,000 over the last two years.
“This will be the biggest number the government has ever employed within a short span of time since independence,” he said.
Professors Kindiki, who was hosted by West Mugirango MP Steve Mogaka and Nyamira County Deputy Governor Dr.James Gesami, said the government will establish 1450 ICT hubs across the country to enable the youth to find employment online and ease the unemployment burden in the country, instead of being idle minds, which he said is the devil’s workshop.
Testifying that the government is mindful of the youth of this country, Kindiki cited the revival of Kazi kwa vijana mtaani by President Ruto and asked them to embrace it, enabling them to earn an income that will jumpstart their businesses.
“The youths of this country are very intelligent and hard working if they are given an enabling working environment, which the government has promised to provide for them to shake the economy of this country positively,” said he.

He made a personal donation of shillings 2 million towards supporting small traders, especially vegetable vendors in Nyamira County.
On politics, he appealed to senior politicians, such as former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka, to emulate former Prime Minister Raila Odinga in forging peace and forming a broad-based government for the purpose of unity and development, as the best legacy for posterity.
“I know my elder brother Kalonzo as a good Christian and scholar like me. I am going to approach him soon,” he said.
The fund drive was attended by South Mugirango MP Sylivanus Osoro, Nyamira County Woman Representative Jerusha Momanyi, nominated senator Essy Okenyuri, and other leaders from both Nyamira County and the rest of the country.
