Tensions boiled over today as mourners escorting the body of slain teacher and blogger Albert Ojwang stormed Mawego Police Post in Homa Bay County, setting it ablaze in a fiery protest against what they claim was a wrongful death in police custody.
The incident occurred just a day before Ojwang was scheduled to be laid to rest at his rural home in the county.
Hundreds of youth, some carrying placards and others the coffin bearing Ojwang’s remains, marched to the police station chanting slogans demanding justice.

Albert Ojwang, who was known for his outspoken social media posts criticising corruption and police brutality, was arrested late last month under unclear circumstances.
He was first detained at Mawego Police Post before being transferred to Nairobi, where he was later pronounced dead. His family and rights groups have since questioned the cause of death, alleging torture and demanding accountability.
As the burial approaches, local leaders are calling for calm while urging the government to investigate the circumstances surrounding Ojwang’s death.
Ojwang’s burial is scheduled for Friday, July 4, in Homa Bay. Security has been heightened in the area, with a multi-agency team deployed to ensure calm during the funeral.
