Mothers who have undergone the challenge of delivering premature babies express deep gratitude for the invaluable support and training provided by nurses.

Speaking during World Premature Day in Makueni County, Faith Nzioka, a mother whose child, now six years old and weighing only 700 grams at birth, credited the nurses’ expertise and care for their survival.

“Thank God for the gift of life and the guidance of the nurses. My child has thrived, and I attribute it to adhering to cleanliness and diligently following the nurses’ instructions,” remarked Nzioka.

She advocated for the expansion of newborn units to ensure each mother has her own bed, emphasizing the significance of individualized care.

World Premature Day serves as a platform to raise awareness about essential care for women and newborns, highlighting life-saving practices like immediate skin-to-skin contact and Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC).

Dr. Patrick Amoth, Acting Director-General for Health, pledged ongoing training for community health promoters, focusing on enhancing primary health services.

Makueni County Governor Mutula Kilonzo Junior emphasized the urgent need for expanding newborn units, soliciting continued support from donors for essential equipment and health services.

Dr. Paul Musila, Makueni CEC Health, stressed the government’s responsibility to invest substantially in facilities for premature infants, advocating for more affordable drugs for preterm babies.

A 2014 demographic survey revealed that out of 1.5 million newborns annually, 12.3% are preterm, with 183,600 babies born prematurely and 14,595 succumbing to preterm-related complications.
