A mop-up has been launched in Keiyo North Sub-county as it emerges that 134 children who sat last year’s KCPE are yet to join Form One.
Sub-county Commissioner Julius Maiyo noted the area has reported 90 per cent of the 4,063 who sat KCPE are already in school.
Addressing the press, he decried high poverty levels among locals, revealing that he has talked with NGCDF over bursary disbursements.
“The level of poverty here is very high and this is the reason many students are yet to report to school. However, we have talked with NGCDF officials to speed up the release of bursaries,” he stated.
Maiyo further warned of stern action on parents who fail to take their children to school, saying the government is committed to ensuring that the 100 per cent transition is realized.
Meanwhile, 120 bright but needy students from Elgeyo Marakwet County have a reason to smile after receiving full scholarships, thanks to the Elimu Scholarship programme.
Jomo Kenyatta Foundation Coordinator Nelson Oloo said they set the cut mark at 280, with special groups being given priority.
“This time we were taking students who scored 280 marks and above. We were looking for those who are unable to pay fees who include orphans, children of single parents, PWDs and those with chronic illnesses. We also have vulnerable and marginalized groups like the Sengwer,” noted Oloo.
