Mombasa County government has partnered with the Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) to train medical students within the county.
Under the new initiative, two students, a male and a female, would be selected from each of the six constituencies in Mombasa and enrolled in a medical training program in partnership with the university.
According governor Abdulswamad Sheriff, the initiative is meant to enhance medical sector in the county by having local professionals.
He said that his government had for the first time, come up with a frame work to transform the medical sector in the county.
Abdulswamad added that aspiring doctors would take their training at medical facilities outsides the county, then selected students will undertake their practical training at the Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital.

Primarily the programme will target students form disadvantages families in Mombasa including orphans and those whose parents cannot necessarily afford fees required to study a demanding course such as medicine.
According to the governor the selection process will be overseen by a special committee which would identity candidates based on merit and socio economic need.
This initiative is to level the ground for youth from less –privileged household who previously lacked the opportunity to pursue careers in medicine.
The governor also stated that all selected students shall be absorbed into the county health system once they completed their training.

Previously students who have studied health related courses locally, had to leave the county to do their practical training with the Kenyatta national hospital in Nairobi and Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret being the preferred training grounds.
This system left many bright yet underprivileged students from Mombasa behind, since relocating for studies has statistically proven to be very expensive.
Notably this was the second major initiative announced by the Mombasa governor, coming just days after the proposal of a Mombasa Resident’s Card which will act as an identity card to prove that one is a resident of the county
