Molo Academy shut down following students unrest

Molo Academy Boys Secondary School has been closed indefinitely following school unrest.

The students shattered window panes, pulled down an iron sheet fence and shattered the rear windscreen of one of the vehicles belonging to a teacher. Sources revealed that a male teacher was also attacked by angry students during the fracas.

Area acting Deputy County Commissioner Steve Odotteh said the students had been urged to go home to allow investigations into the real cause of their unrest.

Odotteh added that they could not tell the value of damage at the moment as they had to wait for the department of public works to assess the damage. He added that no arrests have been made in connection with the incident.

During an interview with the Education News at the school, Odotteh said the students complained of being given the same diet for consecutive days and dirty water.

The students also called for a stop of the usual preps on weekends and demanded to wear marvin hats to class to prevent them from getting cold.

Residents who spoke to the Education News said they heard gunshots at night as police officers battled with the students in order to calm the situation and prevent more damages.

A parent who sought anonymity said some students trickled in her house when gunshots rented in the air.

“The students’ unrest and gunshots shocked us since it had never happened before. In the past, the school was one of the best performing schools in Nakuru County and ranked first in Molo Sub County,” said Mr. Gitau, a resident.

He said the school, which brought together students from across the country, had been registering good results in KCSE results but as years moved, the performances dropped. He however commended the school for its exemplary performance in 2020 KCSE by producing a top candidate who scored A plain of 81 points.

Molo Sub County Director of Education Mr. Sylvester Musikoyo declined to address the media, saying that he was rushing to another meeting.

The incident comes barely a month after St Joseph’s Elburgon Secondary School students went on strike.

The students were protesting against the transfer of their principal, whom they claimed had helped them improve both in academics and infrastructure development.
