Moi University staff and community have fast-tracked their protest demo against the Vice Chancellor (VC) Prof Isaac Kosgei, demanding that he be removed immediately to save the institution from imminent collapse.

The protest, initially planned for next week, is to force the ejection of the VC from the helm of the varsity leadership owing to his alleged incompetence.

Members of the surrounding community and a section of Moi University staff had joined forces in an attempt to oust the VC.

In a viral video, protesters appeal to President William Ruto and Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Ezekiel Machogu to swiftly replace the VC to save the university from collapse.

“Please, Mr. President, you are a resident of this county, but why have you allowed Moi University to degenerate under your watch? We kindly request your intervention to restore sanity in our university,” an unnamed staff said.

Some of the protesters express their ire. They are demanding the removal of the VC Prof Isaac Kosgey.

According to them, Prof Kosgei is incompetent and inhuman and has caused hostility between the surrounding community and the university.

“Prof Ayiro was much better than this; he had the interests of staff at heart. We have lost several university staff, but Kosgei does not support or even attend fundraising or burials,” a staff member said.

Edward Rotich, a protester from the Kesses community, said urgent measures to bring a new VC are needed to restore the dwindling glory of the university that they pride in.

Cornelius Murgor, a community youth leader, accused the VC of fostering a toxic environment and engaging in corruption and mismanagement of the institution.

Prof Kosgei took over the university leadership five years ago from Prof Laban Ayiro, who served for a year.

Until his appointment, Prof Kosgei was the deputy VC in charge of administration and finance at Laikipia University.
