Moi University employees and the Kesses community have united to stage a protest on Monday in the wake of escalating discontent amid rising insecurity and a surge in allegations of incompetence, corruption and mismanagement of varsity resources.

The focal point of this collective demonstration is the unequivocal demand for the immediate removal of Vice Chancellor (VC) Prof Isaac Kosgey, whom they deem unfit for his position.

The decision culminated in a formal notification submitted to the Kesses Police Station, informing them of the forthcoming demonstration.

In a press address, the organizers vehemently castigated Prof Kosgey’s leadership, characterizing it as inept and detrimental to the university’s well-being.

Youth leader Cornelius Kultan Murgor articulated the grievances.

“As residents and workers of Moi University, we demand the immediate dismissal of the VC as his leadership has fostered a toxic environment of corruption, mismanagement and strained relationships,” he said.

The protestors, citing escalating insecurity both within and outside the university premises under Prof. Kosgey’s tenure, expressed frustration over alleged attempts by the university administration to quash dissent through tactics of bribery and intimidation.

Bernard Meli, another organizer, disclosed that they were offered Ksh50,000 by Prof. Kosgey’s associates to halt the demonstrations.

Undeterred, they declared: “We will not be silenced. We will continue this protest at any cost.”

In a direct plea to President William Ruto, the protestors implored his intervention to restore sanity at Moi University, urging the president, a native of the region, to act before the situation deteriorates further.

Edward Rotich stressed the urgent need for a new VC.

“Our university is collapsing under the leadership of Prof. Kosgey,” he lamented, adding: “We need a new VC to lead Moi University back to its former glory.”

Human rights activist Kimutai Kirui shed light on financial irregularities intensifying employee frustration, citing delayed salary payments and non-remittance of deductions.

“We have been granted permission, and we will hold a mother of all demonstrations on Monday until the VC is removed.

We urge the police to provide us with adequate security during the protest,” Kirui declared with unwavering determination.
