Over 3,000 Moi University employees have begun a go-slow, boycotting work in protest of frequent salary delays and workplace frustrations.

The staff, from the main campus and the College of Health Sciences, warned that they may escalate to a full-scale strike if the university management does not promptly address their grievances.

Led by Richard Okero of Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) and the Kenya Universities Staff Union (KUSU) Secretary Mary Chepkwemoi, the varsity staff petitioned President Ruto to intervene in the matter.

“We want our money. We have not been paid since June,” Chepkwemoi said.

She lamented that the university had also not remitted required deductions for loan payments and other financial obligations to banks for the past seven years.

“We know Ruto will be in Eldoret to elevate the town to city status but we are telling him this will be a city of problems with people suffering like us,” she said.

The officials stated that the workers were deeply in debt, with some even passing away due to financial stress.

Okero mentioned that one financial institution had taken legal action against workers, leading to the auctioning of their assets because of unremitted loan deductions.

The workers further called for the resignation of Vice Chancellor (VC) Kosgey and the disbandment of the university council.

“We are asking Ruto to ensure that we have a new management at Moi University failure to which the university will collapse,” Chepkwemoi said.

VC Kosgey was yet to provide a comment on the matter at the time of publication.
