Moi University lecturers call off strike

UASU Secretary-General Constantine Wasonga (second left) flanked by other union officials, addresses the media this evening after Moi University staff agreed to call off their strike following talks with the administration.

Lecturers at Moi University have agreed to suspend their strike following a crucial meeting with the university administration this evening.

Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) Secretary-General Constantine Wasonga announced that both parties are now committed to collaboratively developing long-term strategies for stability and fair compensation.

This resolution follows a prolonged standoff driven by unpaid June and July salaries, delayed pension contributions, and unaddressed statutory deductions—disputes central to UASU’s industrial action since late August.

The union has insisted on respect for their rights, expressing dissatisfaction with prior settlement offers by labelling them “too little”

Recently, efforts to negotiate stalled, prompting Education CS Julius Ogamba to intervene and host consultative sessions involving university management and UASU leadership at Jogoo House in Nairobi.

Though these talks did not immediately resolve the crisis, they instilled cautious optimism for a breakthrough.

Securing an end to the strike offers students and faculty welcome relief.
