Moi University lecturers allege termination threats amid strike

Striking lecturers at Moi University in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County, have alleged receiving termination threats over their ongoing strike, which began on August 20, 2025.

The lecturers, under the Universities’ Academic Staff Union (UASU), accuse the institution of neglecting their welfare, including failure to remit pension funds, unpaid loans, and a lapse in medical cover for the past three months.

Led by UASU official Duncan Mukhwana, the lecturers vowed not to resume duty until their grievances are addressed, dismissing what they termed as intimidation tactics by the university.

“We are aware that some of our members are being threatened with dismissal if they fail to report back to work. We want to assure them that no such action will take place,” Mukhwana said.

The union further claimed that due to unpaid loans, staff members cannot access financial facilities, worsening their plight. They insisted that unless the university council engages them in a genuine agreement, the strike will continue indefinitely.
