Learning activities at Moi University are in jeopardy following a new seven-day strike notice issued by the Universities’ Academic Staff Union (UASU).

The notice, which threatens to halt academic programmes scheduled to resume in early September, was sent to Professor Noah Midamba, the Chairman of the Moi University Council.

According to a letter signed by UASU National Secretary General Constantine Wasonga, lecturers are prepared to down their tools starting Wednesday, August 20, 2025, (Today) if their grievances are not addressed.

The union accuses the university administration of multiple breaches, including the failure to pay salaries for June and July 2025 as stipulated in the 2021-2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

This alleged non-compliance with the negotiated pay rates is a major point of contention and raises serious doubts about the administration’s commitment to its staff.

In addition to the salary dispute, the lecturers claim the university has failed to implement the Return-To-Work Formula signed on November 30, 2024.

The union’s letter, dated August 12, outlines four key areas of concern, which also include the university’s failure to adhere to clauses on staff promotions and the retirement age as mandated by the national CBA.

The union further alleges that the university has violated constitutional and labour rights, a claim that deepens the rift between the academic staff and the administration.

This development poses a significant challenge to the university’s management as it works to ensure a smooth start to the new academic year following the recent nationwide lecturers strike that happened last year which saw learning activities paralyzed for almost two months.
