Moi University has disowned a degree certificate allegedly belonging to Eldoret City Board Chairman Julius Kimeli Kitur, declaring it inauthentic and not issued by the institution.

In a letter dated October 22, 2025, and addressed to the Clerk of the Uasin Gishu County Assembly, the university’s Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics, Research, Extension & Student Affairs) confirmed that the degree certificate presented for verification “is not authentic and was not issued by Moi University.”

The letter, signed by P. R. Bartoo on behalf of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, further indicated that a copy of the questioned certificate had been marked “not authentic” and returned to the assembly for necessary action.

Kitur was recently appointed as the Chairman of the Eldoret City Board by Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii Chelilim, a position that plays a crucial role in overseeing the planning, management, and development of Eldoret City.

The revelation has sparked concern within county leadership circles, with questions likely to arise regarding the vetting process and verification of academic credentials for key appointments.

Moi University, one of Kenya’s leading public institutions, has in recent months tightened its verification protocols amid growing reports of fake academic documents being used in public service recruitment and appointments.

As of now, neither Kitur nor the Uasin Gishu County Government has issued a public statement regarding the authenticity dispute.

The County Assembly is expected to deliberate on the university’s communication and decide on the next course of action concerning Kitur’s appointment.
