Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentist Union (KMPDU) and Moi University College of Health Sciences management have signed a return to work formula after calling off their strike.
While speaking to the press after signing the agreement, the Principal Secretary for State Department of University Education and Research Simon Nabukuesi thanked the school’s management, KMPDU and the University Council for coming with the right attitude of resolving the matter as the school had been closed for almost two months.
“After meeting with the school management for over 6 hours, KMPDU officials together with the University Council, we have agreed that all enhanced arrears for doctor lecturers will be paid immediately,” said Nabukuesi.
The strike which had taken 77 days had paralyzed operations in the institution forcing its closure.
He further said that they agreed that doctors salaries that were not paid from the month of December be paid with immediate effect.
“I want to encourage, for the interest of the nation, that we have calm in universities, stability so that students learn according to schedule studies complete their studies and join then in nation development,” he added.
He said that disruption of studies delay completion of courses and makes learning more expensive.
“All disciplinary proceeding that the university had taken against the lecturers and union officials will be withdrawn immediately. We have a framework to ensure that it is out probably by Monday where lecturers will resume work immediately,” KMPDU Secretary General Dr. Davji Bhimji Atella said after the university signed the return to work formula.
Moi University Vice Chancellor Prof. Isaac Kosgey thanked PS Nabukuesi for spearheading the process that led to the signing of return to work formula.
“We have signed a return to wok formula where we are going to pay the areas and sort out all the issues that led to the strike. Students will soon be called back to school,” said the Vice Chancellor.
