Teacher Rosemary Bosibori Onyancha of Moi Forces Academy in Lanet, Nakuru, has been awarded the African Union’s (AU) Continental Best Teacher Award.

She was recognized for her innovative teaching methods, marking a significant milestone in recognition of Kenyan teachers in the continent.

The honour was bestowed upon her during an event organized by the AU Commission to celebrate World Teachers’ Day on October 5.

Established in 2019, this prestigious award seeks to acknowledge and reward exceptional educators from across the African continent.c

In the company of seven other outstanding teachers representing various African nations, including Ghana, Malawi, Mauritania, Mauritius, Morocco, Nigeria and South Africa, Bosibori’s commitment to pioneering teaching approaches and educational equality rose above all challengers.

Bosibori’s success can be attributed to her fervour in integrating technology into education. She firmly believes that technology enriches the learning experience and equips learners with necessary tools to meet the demands of the digital age.

To achieve this, she employs modern tools such as Google Classroom and Teams for remote and distance learning, providing her students with a dynamic experience.

Beyond her place as a teacher, Bosibori is profoundly interested in technology, particularly Artificial Intelligence (AI).

She envisions emerging technologies like Generative Artificial Intelligence as catalysts for revolutionizing education and preparing students for an ever-evolving future.

Furthermore, her unwavering dedication to addressing educational disparities and ensuring equal access to quality education is a driving force behind her teaching philosophy.

In response to the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, Bosibori swiftly adopted technology to facilitate remote learning, even via mobile devices.

Collaboration among educators is another passion of Bosibori’s. She actively engages with the Google Educators Group (GEG Kenya), an online platform that fosters discussion and mutual learning among educators.

Additionally, she is an active member, volunteer and contributor to the Robotics Society of Kenya, a non-profit organization committed to promoting computing in educational institutions and communities.

When asked about solutions for reducing the teacher shortage and ensuring their excellence, Bosibori emphasizes the importance of prioritizing teacher welfare.

She stressed the need to improve working conditions and enhancing quality of pre-service education, as well as provision of ongoing professional development.

Bosibori’s collaborative efforts also led to her school being recognized as an HP Innovation and Digital Education Academy (HP IDEA) school.

Their project “Digital Presentation in Learning Enhances Communication Skills” played a pivotal role in this achievement, with the principal Jedidah Mwangi being one of the distinguished fellows involved in this initiative.
