The Ministry of Education, (MoE) has issued a stern warning to schools involved in legal wrangles over sports-related issues, urging them to resolve disputes amicably to avoid wasting public resources.
Speaking during the official opening of the National School Games at the Mumias Sports Complex in Kakamega, Director General for Basic Education, Dr. Elyas Abdi, said that rising court battles between public schools were unnecessary and damaging.
“Engaging in legal action over school sports is a misuse of resources that should instead support education and the development of sports,” Dr. Abdi said. “We are encouraging schools to seek peaceful solutions through dialogue and administrative channels.”

The Ministry’s remarks come amid an increase in legal disputes involving school sports, ranging from eligibility disagreements to contesting tournament results. Some cases have reportedly delayed competitions and caused rifts between institutions.
Dr. Abdi emphasized that school sports should be a unifying factor and a platform for talent development, not a source of division.
“The spirit of the National School Games is rooted in unity, fairness, and opportunity for our youth. We must protect that spirit by fostering mutual respect and avoiding confrontational approaches,” he added.

The National School Games, which bring together participants from all 47 counties, are seen as a key event in identifying and nurturing young talent. The week-long competition in Kakamega is expected to conclude with selections for regional and international school sports events.
The MoE is now calling on school administrators, sports officials, and education stakeholders to prioritize collaboration over conflict, warning that future legal cases may lead to disciplinary reviews for involved parties.
The directive underscores the government’s broader efforts to promote integrity and accountability within the education system.
