MoE urges schools to participate in 2025 Mazingira Awards (FLAMA)

Ministry of Education, (MoE) through the state department of Basic education is urging Primary, Junior and Secondary schools to fully participate in the 2025, First Lady Mazingira Awards, (FLAMA).

According to a circular from the Ministry of Education dated June 9, and signed by the Director General of the State Department for Basic Education, Dr. Elyas Abdi, all regional directors of education and all county directors of education, are directed to disseminates the attached guidelines to all Primary, Junior and secondary schools in their jurisdiction and ensure the entries are submitted by the stated dates.

Unveiled by the first lady  Mama Rachel Ruto, during the Africa Climate Summit on 7th September, 2023, FLAMA aims at molding young minds to be eco-aware by instilling core competencies such as critical thinking, communication, problem solving, citizenship, digital literacy, self-efficiency and creativity.

The ministry underscored that the awards is an important part of the Basic Education Curriculum framework which lays emphasis on nurturing learner’s potential through practical and creative learning.

With this year’s theme being end pollution, conserve the environment, the award presents an opportunity for learners to apply what they learn in classes to environmental conservation therefore addressing the pressing climate issues.

“The award will enlighten and empower learners to become Environmental stewards and climate change ambassadors by putting classroom into practice in creative and practical ways.” Stated Dr. Abdi in the circular addressed to all Regional and County Directors of Education.

FLAMA is a nationwide initiative and participation is open to primary, junior and secondary schools.

In line with the Basic Education Curriculum Framework of encouraging learners to translate classroom theory into practical and impactful action, outstanding student- led environmental initiatives will be recognized and awarded.
