MoE to close schools that will not comply to safety standards by January

The Ministry of Education has reiterated that it will close all schools that will not have complied with safety standards by January next year.

Basic Education Principal Secretary Dr. Belio Kipsang’ has stated that the government has set up a multiagency team to carry out the audit regarding compliance to school safety and standard manual.

“We are very concerned about some facilities in our institutions like dormitories, laboratories and other facilities which must be in good condition to safe guard our learners in schools”, said Dr. Kipsang during a visit at Olkalou Comprehensive School in Nyandarua.

The team consists of officials from MoE, Public Health, and Ministry of Interior among other government officials from different state agencies; with Dr. Kipsang’ encouraging parents and other stakeholders to be visiting schools that their children are learning and know the facilities used within the school.

“We urged our parents to be always visit the schools and know where their children are learning, some parents after paying school fees they leave everything to School heads not knowing they have a right to visit the school and know the kind of environment that their children are living in”,  he added.

He also encourage the Union leaders to be a key stakeholders in the ensuring the standards of safety of learners in schools, noting that the government will be firm and will take action on any school head who don’t comply.
