Ministry of Education has spent a total of Sh161,585, 100 in the construction of 205 classrooms in Migori County ahead of the rollout of Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) in Junior Secondary Schools in January 2023.

Speaking at Masara Secondary School during the grand launch of a CBC classroom, the County Director of Education Mr. Jacob Onyiego revealed that all classrooms under construction will be commissioned for use by the end of February, before the nation exams commence.

Onyiego applauded the school heads and contractors who have ensured the process in made possible through adequate supervision and construction of quality modern classrooms.

“We have started the process of launching completed classrooms across the county in the first phase of construction of 205 classrooms in 195 schools. I am happy that the principals have done a great job in supervision of construction of the CBC classrooms and in the same spirit to ensure this is completed before exams commence,” said Onyiego.

The school Principal Mr. Daniel Aloka also applauded the Ministry of Education on the on the move to select the school in the process of implementing CBC in junior secondary level of education.

He noted that the continuous expansion at the institution will also help in the decongestion of learners due to the speedy growth of student population at the school.

“With the current number of students standing at 900, we appreciate the efforts made by the Ministry of Education, National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF) Suna West and the Board of Management for the continuous support to ensure the school grows to better standards through infrastructural development. We have a laboratory, dormitory and classrooms constructed by Suna West NG-CDF under the leadership of Hon. Peter Masara” said Aloka.

Aloka disclosed to Education News that the school has set a mean grade target of 7.0 with the current form four candidates.

He also lauded other education stakeholders for their efforts towards the steady growth of the school; a move he said has been the backbone of Masara Secondary Schools’ good performance.

The principal however noted that the school is faced with challenges of school fees remittance by parents, which he blamed on the squeezed school calendar.

“Most of the parents we have here at the school have little income to maintain constant payment of school fees and since we also wish to keep the learners in school, we manage with whatever little that is available. It would not be in the best interest to see more students drop out of school due to lack of school fees but we urge parents to try their best,” added Aloka.

His sentiments were echoed by school’s Senior Teacher Mr. Fredrick Okello Joash who thanked the ministry for selecting the school in the implementation process of CBC.
