After the end of COVID 19 pandemic, Ministry of Education reverted back to normal school calendar that was to be characterized by the usual opening date to be after end month. MoE has been urged by the stakeholders to consider revising the opening dates of the current education circle.
Second term’s opening date is scheduled for 26th May, a date that many parents and workers will have not received their end month salaries yet, MoE expect them to send their children to school when they are fully prepared to commence the term.
Many parents who spoke to Education news registered their frustrations over the ministry’s decision to have opening date before the month ends.
“The ministry officials should not live in utopia, we depend on money that we earn at the end of the month to send our children to school “lamented one tea farmer from Nyeri County.
“Our milk factories pay us by 5th.When we are told that schools reopen on 26th of April, we find ourselves in absolute confusion” complained Sugut a dairy farmer from Njoro Nakuru County.

The current system where opening dates come before end of the month has equally gave a humongous task to civil servants and teachers.
“Imagine a situation where you work far from home then you are supposed to report back for school opening and the end of month salary is nowhere, it’s quite inconveniencing. We are sometimes forced to borrow in order to travel back ,“ lamented Mbone a teacher in Kakamega County.
Various stakeholders interviewed by Education News did indicate that the ministry of Education should have fully reverted back to the initial opening dates after the end COVID 19 pandemic. To them, they find it comfortable to deal and tackle their children back to school demands at the end of the month when they have money.
With stakeholders honors and numerous appreciations directed to Dr Migos Ogamba, the current Education Cabinet secretary, it is hoped that the education calendar be altered so as to accommodate views from the concerned. Dr Ogamba continues to receive accolades for what many see as stabilization of Education docket. His approach to pertinent issues has recommended him to many stakeholders in the education sector.
