MoE reveals teachers re-rooting for shift from CBC to CBE ongoing

Ministry of Education, (MoE) Head of Directorate Field coordination and Co-curriculum services, Nelson Sifuna has revealed that the re-rooting of teachers in preparation for the shift from the competency based curriculum (CBC) to the more refined and practical model competency based education (CBE) is ongoing.

He said government is working on reaching the teachers to re-root the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) programme, to the Competency Based Education (CBE), as the grade nine learners are set to join the senior schools in seven months’ time.

Sifuna, speaking during Pioneer Group of Schools’ Prize Giving day in Maragua, Murang’a County reiterated the ministry’s commitment towards collaborating with the private sector so as to improve and harness the levels of education in the country through CBE.

Sifuna who, represented Education Principal Secretary Prof. Julius Bitok noted that efforts to make the transition smooth were in top gear with a planned school heads conference in Mombasa starting tomorrow, June 24.

“The CBC education will allow our children to develop their talents, as what has been demonstrated by the Pioneer Group of Schools, private institutions for their contribution and dedication in making the CBE a reality in schools” he said.

He applauded the school, adding that he witnessed a magnificent show of aviation demonstrated by students who are pilots.

“The school has produced pilots without an airfield and hangars, and has trained maritime engineers also without being close to a lake nor an ocean. The learners are involved in Artificial Intelligence (AI),” he observed

He also explained that the government has continued collaborating with the private institutions to improve studies.

“There is enough proof that our schools can actualize the CBE, designed to shape out children to be responsible citizens and contribute to society positively regardless of their grades in their final exams,” he said.

Chairman to the Pioneer Group Dr. Peter Munga revealed that since the inception of the aviation lessons, the school has produced 300 commercial pilots, and also the students have been exposed to golf where they interact with professionals.

“To assist our learners to venture into Marine engineering, we have engaged with experts in the field. In Africa Marine Engineering is only taught at Pioneer School and Durban School in South Africa,” said Munga, also the founder of Equity Bank.

He urged the government to consider including the institution in the list of selection of schools as the school had shown capability to provide the three pathways in education as required by the ministry of education.
