MoE releases 2026 calendar for primary and JSS sports

The Ministry of Education has released the 2026 calendar outlining county, regional, and national sports competitions for primary and Junior Secondary School learners across the country.

The Ministry of Education (MoE) has unveiled the 2026 calendar for Primary and Junior Secondary School (JSS) sports activities, setting clear dates and venues for county, regional, and national competitions nationwide.

In a circular dated February 17, 2026, issued through the Regional Director of Education, Nyanza, the MoE outlined the schedule for Term One and Term Two competitions, marking the beginning of preparations for what is expected to be a vibrant national sports season.

Term One

County-level competitions will run from March 25 to March 29, 2026, across all respective counties.

Regional competitions will take place from March 31 to April 1, 2026, while the Term One National Championships are scheduled for April 7 to April 11, 2026.

Term Two 

For Term Two, county competitions will take place from July 15 to July 19, 2026.

For Nyanza, the regional championships will be held from July 21 to July 22, 2026, at Awendo Green Stadium in Migori County.

The Term Two National Championships will run from July 28 to August 1, 2026, at Thika Municipality in the Central Region.

The circular seen by Education News was signed on behalf of the Regional Director of Education by Allan Omondi and copied to the TSC Regional Director – Nyanza.

School sports remain a cornerstone of Kenya’s education system, playing a vital role in nurturing young talent and building life skills such as discipline, teamwork, resilience, and leadership.

With the implementation of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), co-curricular activities, including sports, have gained renewed emphasis as integral components of holistic learner development.

As schools begin preparations, the 2026 sports season is expected to provide a strong platform for talent identification, national integration, and youth empowerment through sport.
