The Ministry of Education(MoE) has issued a new directive requiring all secondary school student athletes to be registered through a digital platform before participating in any official school sports competitions. The order was issued in a circular by the PS of State Department for Basic Education, Prof. Julius Bitok.
The directive applies to all competitions organized by the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA). The registration will take place on a digital platform developed by KSSSA. This platform is connected to the Education Management Information System, which will allow automatic verification of student information. The Ministry says this system is designed to eliminate cases of cheating and ensure that only eligible students represent their schools.
According to the directive, school principals must make sure that all student athletes are actual students at their institutions. Any attempt to register non students or give false information will result in punishment according to existing education and sports regulations. The ministry also emphasized that no student will be allowed to compete unless they are properly registered in the system.

The circular was sent to Regional, County and Sub-County Directors of Education, along with National, Regional, County and Sub-County KSSSA officials. All secondary schools across the country are expected to comply with the new rules ahead of the upcoming Term Two games.
In addition to boosting transparency, the Ministry expects the digital system to help keep accurate records of participants. It will also improve coordination among school heads, education officers and sports officials. Schools that fail to register their players through the platform may be barred from taking part in official competitions.
The ministry further stated that all registration must be completed within the timelines provided by KSSSA. Principals have been advised to contact officials from the Ministry or KSSSA in case they face challenges or require clarification during the registration process.
