The Ministry of Education (MoE) has partnered with Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) to plant 1.2 million trees in public schools countrywide, a move that aims to combat climate change through adoption of clean energy and afforestation.

In a letter dated May 29, 2023 and signed by the Basic Education Principal Secretary Dr. Belio Kipsang, County Directors of Education have been instructed to allow KCB visit public schools to undertake tree planting activities.

In the latter copied to all Regional Directors of Education, the PS further instructed the education field officers to ensure such activities do not interfere with the normal school learning hours.

“The Ministry has partnered with KCB Bank to plant 1.2m trees in public schools. The bank will therefore reach out to schools to undertake the tree planting activities which should not interrupt normal learning in schools,” said Dr. Kipsang.

The government plans to plant 15 billion trees by 2032 in a move to reach 30 per cent forest cover.
