MoE issues strict guidelines on management of school sports activities

Nelson Sifuna. Head, Directorate of Field Coordination in the Ministry of Education

The Ministry of Education (MoE) has issued a firm directive to education officers nationwide, outlining strict guidelines for managing school sports and co-curricular activities during Term Two.

The circular, authored by Nelson Sifuna, the Head of the Directorate of Field Coordination and Co-Curricular Activities (DFC & CCA) at the Ministry of Education, was addressed to all Regional Directors of Education and copied to County and Sub-county Directors of Education.

“As we commence Term Two activities, you are reminded to strictly adhere to the resolutions and guidelines agreed upon during our recent conference on the management of co-curricular and related educational activities at all levels,” said Sifuna.

A significant highlight of the directive is the enforcement of travel timelines for learners. “All transportation of learners must strictly occur between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. No exceptions will be tolerated, and any breach of this directive will be treated as a violation of Ministry policy,” Sifuna cautioned.

To promote accountability and safety, the Ministry emphasised that only registered teachers may accompany learners to official events. “Only duly registered teachers are permitted to accompany, train, conduct, and manage learners during official activities. Unregistered individuals must not be involved in any capacity,” the directive reads.

The guidelines also highlight the importance of gender-sensitive accompaniment to ensure appropriate supervision.

“At least one male teacher must accompany male learners, and at least one female teacher must accompany female learners to ensure appropriate support and supervision at all times,” he said.

Sifuna oversees the coordination of educational field activities and co-curricular programs nationwide, urging education officers to ensure the immediate dissemination of guidelines to all schools under their jurisdiction.

“Your cooperation in implementing these directives is crucial to the success and integrity of our programs,” he concluded.

The guidelines arrive at a time when schools are intensifying their preparations for sports competitions and other co-curricular activities.
