Parents of Kisii National Polytechnic have blamed Cabinet Secretary for Education (CS), Dr Julius Ogamba, for allegedly hurrying in the transfer of the Principal, Tom Mulati.
Speaking to Education News in Kisii town on Wednesday, the concerned parents, led by Robert Marita, said they received complaints of corruption against the principal from their children and advised them to follow the right channels to address their grievances and for the principal to be probed accordingly.
“We thought that the principal would be summoned to account for the alleged misappropriation of funds, but he was transferred to cover up the mess rather than dealing with the claims first,” said Hellen Nyagami.
The students had raised their complaints about the principal’s alleged ills, which ranged from nepotism in the polytechnic’s staff recruitment to mistreatment of his teaching staff, failure to remit money for students’ academic tours, and embezzlement of the institution’s finances, among other allegations.

The students, backed by former MCAs Kefah Morefu (Kisii Central Ward) and Samuel Aboko (Kiogoro Ward), vowed to invade the polytechnic and eject the principal unless the government transferred him.

At that time, Dr Ogamba told them to be calm and promised to form a Commission led by PS in the State Department of TVET sector institutions, Dr Esther Muoria, to deal with the situation.
The parents expected feedback from the Ministry that could include an institution’s audit report, but instead, they received information about the principal’s transfer.
“We expected to get a comprehensive report about what was happening in this institution before he could be pushed out,” said Athanus Mose.
They lauded Kisii County Senator Richard Onyonka, who asked for an updated audit report from the institution before the principal handed it over to his successor.
Education News, however, learnt that Tom Mulati was transferred to Kitale National Polytechnic in a huff as he handed over to his successor, Akalo John Otieno, who had swapped places with him from Kitale National Polytechnic.
