The Ministry of Education, (MoE) has issued a directive requiring all secondary school principals to ensure mandatory digital registration of student-athletes participating in the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) competitions.

In a circular dated July 4, 2025, signed by the Principal Secretary for Basic Education, Prof. Julius K. Bitok, the Ministry announced that the registration will be conducted exclusively through the Integrated KSSSA-KEMIS digital platform. The system is designed to enhance the integrity, fairness, and transparency of school sports across the country.

“This directive is in line with the Ministry’s and KSSSA’s commitment to upholding the integrity of school sports, promoting fair play, and ensuring that only eligible and genuine student athletes participate in the competitions,” stated Prof. Bitok.

The new system, which is integrated with the Education Management Information System (KEMIS), will verify and authenticate all player details. Principals have been directed to ensure that all registered players are bona fide students enrolled in their respective schools.

The circular warned of strict consequences for schools that attempt to falsify information or register ineligible players.

“Any falsification of information or registration of ineligible players will be sanctioned as stipulated by the existing rules and regulations,” the Ministry cautioned.

The move is seen as part of broader efforts to professionalize and streamline co-curricular activities within the education sector, amid concerns about age cheating and use of non-students in national school tournaments.

“All Principals must comply with this directive,” the statement emphasized.

Queries and clarifications are to be directed to relevant officials within the Ministry of Education and KSSSA structures.
