MMUST’s Webuye Campus upgraded to TVET status in strategic shift

MMUST’s Webuye Campus to empower youth with new technical programmes.

Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology’s Webuye Campus has been officially re-designated as a Technical and Vocational Institute.

The transition follows high-level deliberations between the university’s administration, regional leaders, and key stakeholders, culminating in a unanimous agreement to reposition the institution as a centre of technical and vocational excellence.

Addressing journalists after the stakeholders’ forum, Professor Moses Poipoi, on behalf of the university, confirmed that the revamped institute will roll out a diverse portfolio of technical programs, all of which will adhere to Kenya’s Competency-Based Education and Training (CBET) framework.

The initiative is intended to equip young Kenyans with industry-relevant skills and certifications.

Professor Stephen Odebero, who assumes the role of principal of the new institution, hailed the development as a timely intervention that will unlock opportunities for thousands of youth seeking practical training. “This milestone ushers in a new era for the region. We are committed to establishing a robust institution that meets national and global training standards,” Prof Odebero remarked.

Meanwhile, leaders who played a role in the transition process have urged the Bungoma County Government to expedite the formal transfer of land ownership to the new institution. They also assured the public of heightened security measures to safeguard the facility and its leadership.

The strategic elevation of the Webuye campus to a technical training hub is seen as a game-changer in Kenya’s education sector, reinforcing the government’s broader agenda of promoting technical and vocational education as a driver of socio-economic transformation.
