Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) Webuye Campus has officially been re-launched as a Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institution.

After five years of closure, the campus reopened its doors in September 2024, a result of a strategic agreement between MMUST’s management and the leadership of Bungoma County.

The transformation is set to revitalize the local economy, which has struggled since the collapse of Pan Paper. Webuye Senior Chief Barasa Misiko welcomed the move stating the move will awaken the businesses in the area.

“With the TVET College in place, businesses, job opportunities, and housing developments will grow, breathing new life into Webuye.” This sentiment was echoed by Webuye West Sub-county Administrator Eunice Simuli, who emphasised the crucial role of practical training in fostering local development and attracting investment.

Professor Stephen Odebero, the Acting Principal of the college, affirmed the institution’s dedication to providing high-quality technical and vocational education.

“The campus had been dormant for too long. We have now revitalized it and made it operational. Our goal is to build an institution that transforms lives and anchors development in this region,” he said.

Currently, the college has enrolled 50 students in its Diploma in Pedagogy program, with plans to introduce a wider array of courses in the near future.

Professor Moses Poipoi, Dean of the School of Education, announced that the college is prepared to implement over 40 diploma and certificate programs. These programs will be accredited by both the Technical and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TVETA) and the Commission for University Education (CUE), and will follow the Competency-Based Education and Training (CBET) model, designed to equip students with practical, industry-relevant skills.

“MMUST TVET collaborates closely with TVETA and CUE to maintain high academic standards and ensure our graduates are well-prepared for employment.” Professor Poipoi added
