MMUST partners with EACC to uproot graft in the institution

By Hilda Atika

Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) in partnership with the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has embarked on a programme aimed at curbing corruption as part of the Commission’s mandate on systems review and accountability.

This comes after the university’s management faced graft scandals in the years before Vice Chancellor (VC) Prof. Solomon Shibairo came into leadership.

While launching the programme at the university with the VC, EACC Director of Services Vincent Okong’o noted that they had been to other institutions of higher learning with the same mission.

He pointed out that procurement, construction of school projects, enhancing technology, health services and disaster management needed accountability and transparency.

Okong’o said that they were developing a report on findings they had collected so far and would present it at a later date.

According to MMUST Council Chair Dr. Musanaji Rutiva, EACC shall check on progress of systems, documents and policies to ensure processes are transparent and its implementers have integrity.

Prof. Shibairo said the university’s Human Resource department had streamlined procurement processes, project management, staff promotions and also hiring and firing workers to ensure the institution had a competent workforce.

He added that they were currently financially stable thus all employers were paid on time in addition to trying their level best to meet workers’ demands.

The VC was optimistic that the varsity would provide more employment opportunities to members from the surrounding community for harmonious coexistence and development as part of its social responsibility.
