The Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) has moved to reassure students and staff following a disturbance reported at one of its main lecture halls earlier this week.

In an internal memo dated March 26, the Office of the Registrar (Academic Affairs) confirmed that the incident occurred on the afternoon of Wednesday, March 25, during an ongoing lecture at the MEA 001 Lecture Hall.

University management said it had received reports of the disruption and had since launched investigations to establish the cause and circumstances surrounding the incident.

“As investigations continue, we reassure you that normal business in the University is ongoing,” read part of the memo addressed to all students.

The communications, signed by Registrar of Academic Affairs Prof. Judah Ndiku, urged students to remain calm, continue attending classes, and adhere strictly to the institution’s rules and regulations as outlined in the Students Handbook.

Despite the confirmation, the university did not disclose further details regarding the nature of the disturbance, leaving questions about what may have triggered the incident.

However, the administration’s swift response underscores efforts to maintain order and prevent any potential escalation that could disrupt academic programmes.

The memo was circulated widely among key university officials, including the Vice Chancellor, Deputy Vice Chancellor in charge of Academic and Student Affairs, the Dean of Students, and heads of departments—an indication of the seriousness with which the matter is being treated.

Student leadership was also brought into the loop, with the MMUSO President tasked with helping disseminate the information among the student body.

Higher learning institutions across the country have in the past experienced sporadic unrest, often linked to academic, administrative, or welfare concerns. Such incidents, if not managed promptly, can disrupt learning and affect institutional stability.

At MMUST, however, the administration appears keen to project calm and continuity, emphasizing that teaching and other university operations remain uninterrupted.

The outcome of the ongoing investigations is expected to shed more light on the incident and inform any further action by the university management.

For now, students have been advised to stay focused on their studies as the institution works to address the situation.
