Multimedia University of Kenya (MMU) Council Chairperson Albert Kochei has defended the New Universities Funding model, saying it will ensure equity and address the mess in higher education.

Kochei said that the determination of students’ needs is based on various parameters, noting that complaints about banding resulted from wrong information submitted by students.

“There are parameters that have been in place to determine the needs of students. However, those who feel they have been put in the wrong bands should appeal,” he noted.

He blamed the rising criticism against the model on misinformation and poor data submission by students, urging professionals and elected leaders to raise awareness among Kenyans on the same.

While lauding the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC), the former Elgeyo Marakwet County Assembly Speaker however called for allocation of more funds to hire more teachers and construct additional infrastructure.

Kochei further condemned the rising cases of Gender-Based Violence in the country, urging parties to seek amicable solutions to solve disagreements.
