MKU introduces 3 new academic programmes

Mount Kenya University (MKU) has taken a significant step to meet market demands and enhance students’ employability by introducing three new academic programmes.

Speaking during the university’s 24th graduation ceremony in Thika, where 5763 graduands received various academic honors, the Vice Chancellor Prof. Deogratius Jaganyi noted that these programs, approved by the University Senate, include Master of Pharmacy in Cosmetic Technology, Master of Pharmacy in Industrial Pharmacy, and Master of Science in Industrial Pharmacognosy and Traditional Training.

Prof. Jaganyi emphasized the importance of aligning the university’s curricula with emerging trends and market demands.

He highlighted the significance of these newly introduced programs in shaping pharmacy training in the country and providing students with a competitive edge in the job market.

Prof. Jaganyi also shared the university’s commitment to advancing technology integration in education.

He mentioned the ongoing upgrade of e-content modules into SCORM files, making digital content self-paced with voiceovers.

The aim is to enhance the suitability and relevance of MKU’s programs while ensuring cost-effectiveness.

The Vice Chancellor emphasized the university’s dedication to improving the e-learning platforms and student management information systems for real-time integration with Microsoft Teams, fostering blended learning experiences for both students and teachers.

To support postgraduate students, Prof. Jaganyi highlighted the enhancements made to the Post Graduate Center in the Nairobi Campus.

He outlined a new roadmap for postgraduate training, emphasizing timely completion for postgraduate students.

Dr. Vicent Gaitho, the MKU Council Chairman, affirmed that these programs would be accessible across all MKU campuses, including Open Distance and Electronic Learning (ODEL) centers nationwide.

He highlighted the establishment of an ODEL center in Embu County, aimed at providing support to students in the Eastern region of Kenya.

Dr. Gaitho emphasized MKU’s commitment to affordable and accessible education, noting the university’s global digital footprint with students enrolled from over 40 nationalities.

He also commended the council’s efforts to ensure international accreditation of programs, fostering equity in higher education.

In addition to academic advancements, VC Jaganyi revealed the university’s focus on Research and Innovation.

He mentioned the market testing of the “WEMA” black soap product, emphasizing the university’s dedication to leveraging partnerships and growing herbal-based trees for innovative and research-led products.

Chancellor Prof. John Struthers encouraged graduates to become problem solvers in their communities, utilizing the knowledge and skills acquired at MKU.

He urged them to remain connected to their Alma Mater and wished them success in their future endeavors.
