MKU becomes overall champions in varsity games

Mount Kenya University (MKU) are the overall champions in this year’s 9th Kenya Inter-University Games held at the University of Nairobi (UoN).

The Thika-based higher learning institution bagged a total of 30 gold, 13 silver and 19 bronze medals to top in the games that 16 universities took part in.

MKU beat Strathmore and the host UoN, who came in second and third positions respectively with 54 and 30 medals.

Some of the universities that participated in the week-long games include; Maseno, Masinde Muliro, Kisii, Meru, Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), Dedan Kimathi, and Kenya Methodist University.

Others are University of Eldoret, Egerton, Moi, Kiriri Women’s University, University of Embu and St Paul’s University.

MKU emerged the best in both men and women categories and the best overall winning university.

Some of the areas that the University proved its prowess include Netball ladies, Woodball men and women, Athletics men and women, Tennis men and women, Scrabble women, Badminton men and women, Karate men and women, Rugby men, Volleyball men, and Tae-Kwondo men and women.

Other teams that represented the university were Soccer ladies, Basketball men and women, Table Tennis and Darts.

The university’s Sports and Creative Arts Coordinator William Luta attributed the teams’ success to adequate preparation and dedication by the athletes.

“I am very proud of these young sportsmen and women. This achievement has been solemnly gained through hard work in training, consistency, team work, and most importantly, by God’s grace,” he said.

He reiterated that MKU has invested heavily in sports through installation of various sporting facilities as a way of promoting academic excellence through sports.

“As a university we are determined to ensure our students are trained, facilitated and exposed in matters talent,” he said.
