Mixed levels of completion of CBC classes in Kisii County

By Enock Okong’o

Most secondary schools in Kisii County are ready to accommodate the new learners in junior secondary because they have completed the construction of the needed classrooms.

A quick survey by Education News revealed that Riambase DEB Secondary School in Nyamache Sub-county has constructed two classrooms for the Competency-Based Curriculum.

The Principal Mrs. Tabitha Mogonchi said they were prepared to accommodate the pioneer CBC learners, assuring parents that the finishing will be by the end of February. She thanked the ministry of education for releasing funds early enough for her management team to complete the work in time.

“I wish the KCPE candidates well and promise to give them a tranquil learning environment when they join Junior Secondary next term,” she said.

At Kenyenya Secondary Secondary School, the principal Mr. Lawerence Makori said the progress was good. The finishing works like roofing, fixing of doors and painting had been done and was now awaiting instructions on the way forward to equip the classrooms.

The principal expressed hope that the ministry will train enough secondary school teachers to handle the new breed of learners when the junior level begins.

At Nyabiore Girls Secondary School, the principal feared the completion of the classrooms might not happen in time.

Mrs Pamellah Change said that she was forced to change the staff room into a classroom to accommodate the current students to meet the 100 percent transition from primary to secondary school. She also cited lack of a library to store books provided by the ministry of education.

“The pressure is coming all at the same time and has overstretched our resources,” she lamented.

The principal appealed to the ministry of education to send more cash to the school to enable them accomplish the development projects.

However, Kenyenya Sub-county Director of Education Mr George Ouma expresssed his satisfaction in the effort by the ministry  to put structures in place.

He appealed to parents and all other stakeholders not to politicize the Competency-Based Curriculum because it is based on individual development of each child.
