Ministry to track missing students for 100 days

The government will track absentee learners for 100 days after reopening to ensure all are back in school.

Education Chief Administrative Secretary Zack Kinuthia said pregnant, lactating and married students will be assisted to resume learning.

Speaking at NEP Girls High School where he was inspecting compliance to Covid-19 protocols and delivery of desks, Kinuthia appealed to parents and caretakers to cooperate with the authorities.

“Girls who are pregnant or are mothers will be allowed to continue learning,” the CAS said.

He called on parents and caretakers in Garissa County to prepare their children for school reopening on January 4.

Kinuthia expressed concern over the slow rate of desk delivery by contractors in the North Eastern region, which, he said, was trailing at 16 per cent against national delivery rate of 46 per cent.

He asked contractors to pull up their socks, saying the desks are needed in schools by January 4.

In his Jamhuri Day speech, President Uhuru Kenyatta warned parents against keeping their children at home.

To make sure all learners are back in class, the President directed the Ministry of Interior, through chiefs, to enforce the back to school programme.

Former Fafi MP Bare Shill, however, said ensuring all children are back in school is easier said than done, particularly in the North Eastern region.

“This place shares a porous border with lawless Somalia and some herders have moved far and wide in search of pasture,” said Shill.
