The Migori County Education director Elizabeth Otieno has asked head-teachers of all boarding schools to implement the new Ministry of Education student discipline guidelines.
She asked them to ensure that all guidelines contained in the circular are implemented to stop to arrest cases of unrest in learning institutions.
She was addressing heads of boarding schools from Rongo and Awendo sub-counties at Kuja Special Education Secondary School in Rongo town.
She said the guidelines issued by the Principal Secretary Ministry of Education Dr. Belio Kipsang will speedily solve cases of unrest facing boarding schools.
Among them is to have an effective guidance and counseling department to solve indiscipline among students rapidly.
She said head-teachers who will fail to implement the guidelines will have to explain why they failed to do so.
Otieno urged them to encourage dialogue and avoid treating learners harshly if they expect discipline to improve among learners in their respective institutions.
She also warned heads and teachers to avoid corporal punishment and instead encourage effective guidance and counseling and help learners not to indulge in unlawful behavior that will ruin their future.
She condemned the destruction of buildings in schools by unruly students over issues that can be addressed amicably.
School indiscipline cases have rocked Migori, among them an incident at Kodero-Bara Boys Secondary School where students set a dormitory on fire.
Rongo MP Paul Abuor bought 50 mattresses and blankets to help candidates whose personal belongings were consumed by the fierce fire.
Otieno directed School Principals to report any cases of indiscipline among learners to relevant authorities for swift action.
“The government has the machinery to handle indiscipline among students effectively to avert possible destruction of available facilities,” she said.
