Ministry releases 2024 co-curriculum calendar for basic, tertiary education

The Ministry of Education (MoE) has released the 2024 co-curriculum calendar for both basic learning and tertiary education levels, which for the first time has incorporated the Junior Secondary School (JSS).

This is revealed in a circular signed by the Principal Secretary (PS) in the State Department for Basic Education Belio Kipsang’ dated November 23, 2023 and addressed to the regional, county and sub-county Directors of Education, all Vice Chancellors (VCs) of both public and private universities, and principals of TTCs and TVET institutions.

In the circular, secondary school sports will be held in term one, with nationals for rugby 15s, athletics, basketball, hockey, handball, cross country and swimming being hosted by the Eastern region in Machakos County from April 6-14, 2024.

The special needs games will be hosted by Rift Valley in Nakuru County.

Primary school athletics will also be held in first term from April 6-14, 2024 in Nyeri County (Central region) which will host the national championships, with those for special needs being held in Rift Valley in Nakuru County.

For JSS, their term one calendar will entail athletics, cross-country, basketball, handball and swimming, with national championships being held in Eastern region in Machakos County from April 6-12, 2024.

Kangaru and Embu University in Embu County (Eastern region) will host the National Drama and Film Festival from April 7-19, 2024 in first term, while Moi Girls High School in Nairobi will host the Science and Engineering Fair from April 6-12, 2024.

TTCs will have their term one ball games, goal ball, athletics and Paralympics national championships from June 3-13, 2024 in Machakos TTC (Eastern).

Soccer, volleyball, netball, rugby 7s for girls and boys, badminton, table tennis, tennis and basketball for secondary schools will be held in second term.

The national championships will be hosted in Kisii County (Nyanza) from July 29, 2024 to August 7, 2024, while that for special needs secondary schools will be hosted by Kisumu County, still in Nyanza, from July 30, 2023 to August 7, 2024.

JSS second term activities will entail soccer, volleyball, netball and basketball and will be hosted in Kisii County from July 30, 2024 to August 7, 2024, while primary school ball games will be hosted in Kakamega County (Western Region) in the same period.

For special needs primary schools, national second term ball games will be held from July 30, 2024 to August 7, 2024 in Kericho County (Rift Valley).

The Kenya Music Festival will be held in second term with national championships being hosted by Rift Valley region in Uasin Gishu County from August 2-14, 2024.

Federation of East Africa Schools Sports Association championship will be in second term in Uganda’s Bukedia Comprehensive and Amus College from August 14-25, 2024, while East Africa Music Dance and Drama will be hosted in Jinja Uganda from August 15-24, 2024.

The ISF (International School Sports Federation) –World Cross Country Championship will be held in Nairobi’s Ngong’ Racecourse from May 10-15, 2024.
