The Ministry of Education in collaboration with Kenya Power is implementing a sensitization programme on electrical safety in primary schools.

The circular dated March 13, 2023 and signed by the Principal Secretary of Basic Education, Dr. Belio Kipsang was addressed to County Directors of Education (CDEs) in Bungoma, Homa Bay, Kakamega, Kiambu, Kirinyaga, Kisii, Kisumu, Meru, Migori, Mombasa, Nakuru, Narok, Siaya, Trans Nzoia and Nairobi counties.

According to Dr. Kipsang, the programme will help; entrench electrical safety culture in schools, impart knowledge to learners on safe use of electricity, reduction of fires in schools, prevention of potential injuries resulting from contact with electricity and enhance smooth running of education programmes in schools.

“This programme will involve sensitization meetings, workshops and distribution of Information, Education and Communication (IEC) materials in 15 counties with high cases of public electrocutions. Sensitization workshops will be held between March and June 2023,” part of the circular reads.

At the same time, the CDEs are asked to provide all necessary support to the teams undertaking the process in an effort to ensure schools are safe zones for all students.
