Ministry hails Germany for supporting education sector

The Ministry of Education has agreed to strengthen the partnership with its German counterpart for the mutual benefit of the youth and education sectors of the two countries.

The agreement was made when the German Ambassador to Kenya, Sebastian Groth, paid a courtesy call to the office of the Cabinet Secretary (CS) for Education, Julius Migos Ogamba yesterday.

CS Ogamba thanked the German government for supporting education, training and research in Kenya, saying that the support had created an environment for cultural exchange, technology and skills transfer.

Principal Secretary (PS) for Basic Education, Dr. Belio Kipsang’, said there were 10,000 students who were taking the German language in over 130 secondary schools.

He added that high school exchange programmes between schools in Kenya and Germany offered students quality immersion and educational programs to improve and practice language skills and enjoy German culture and landscape.

PS for Technical, Vocational Education and Training (TVET), Dr. Esther Muoria, said that Kenya was benefiting from the dual stages of dual vocational training Germany has been running for centuries.

She said Germany had provided technical assistance to link training to industry, enabling students to be work-ready upon completing their training.

PS Muoria, however, said that the Ministry would like to improve the system to a level where the youth train with industry and for the industry.

Also present was the Director for Higher Education, Mr. Darius Ogutu who represented the PS, State Department for Higher Education and Research, Dr. Beatrice Muganda Inyangala.
