Students who did not finish their P1 course due to referrals are relieved after the Ministry of Education (MoE) directed Principals of all Primary Training Colleges to compile, sign and present all referrals and students’ names to the ministry.

A memo signed by MoE Director of Education Yusuf Karayu dated August 28, 2024 and seen by Education News, revealed that there were numerous students who were yet to sit their final examinations due to referrals in the said course, in addition to it being phased out.

“As you are aware, the P1 Course was phased out and replaced by the Diploma Course in Teacher Training. However, there are cases of students who had referrals in the phased out P1 Course and have not taken exams in the respective courses they had referrals hence have not completed the P1 Course.”

“The purpose of this letter therefore, is to request you to compile and sign all cases of referrals in your respective colleges as per the attached template,” the memo reads in part.

The Principals were directed to forward the names of the students to moepte2017@gmail.com and copy the same to nanjakululu@gmail.com by the end of August for administrative action.

In 2020, the government scrapped the long standing P1 course for primary school teachers and instead implemented Diploma as the entry point.

This was done as a way to uphold the standards of the teaching profession as contained in the TSC Act, 2012.
