Emuhaya Member of Parliament (MP) Omboko Milemba says he will move a motion in the National Assembly seeking to amend the delocalization policy for teachers.
Milemba said that he seeks to change the transfer of teachers to become voluntary.
He said forceful transfers of teachers to places that they were least familiar with had negatively impacted on their performance.
The MP said he would have the tutors who were uncomfortable in the areas they were compelled to move to, to choose areas that they felt were safe and conducive to them.
While not opposed to teachers being moved to any part of the country, the legislator said he was against the inhumane and punitive nature of the exercise.
“Delocalization was a noble but rushed idea which was done in a style akin to punishing the teaching fraternity. I seek to have the policy reformed so that teachers can be given options when they reach their time for transfer,” said the MP, who is the former Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) National Chairman.
Milemba claimed that some teachers were battling stress and depression while others had even died or exited the profession altogether.
He said many families had also broken up as a result of the policy.
“There have been break-ups in a number of teachers’ families because the parents have been compelled to live far apart as they were not properly prepared beforehand,” he said.
