Migori teachers ask for better medical scheme

Teachers from Migori County have decried what they say is discrimination on medical services in hospitals.

Led by County Executive Secretary KUPPET aspirant Mr. Kenn Boro, they accused the current union regime of colluding with the Teachers Service Commission to trade with the health insurer.

Mr. Boro accused the union advocates of using teachers’ funds and welfare to trade for their selfish gains.

“Pre-authorization in hospitals has become close to impossible even during emergencies and want the TSC to act swiftly before more teachers lose their lives while waiting for medication,” said Boro.

They also alleged that TSC has also colluded with the union to deduct a huge amount of money from salaries medical cover yet they do not get quality medical services.

“We have not been seeing the impact of the deductions made from our payslips with the pretense of paying the medical insurers, yet teachers continue to suffer and die in pathetic conditions,” he added.

“A week ago, a teacher admitted at Ladopharma Medical Hospital was referred to Oasis Hospital in Kisii county and she had to wait for eight hours for the reauthorization to be confirmed by the insurer before the medic’s attention,” he explained.

Boro noted that despite the union officials receiving complaints from its members over the insurance, they have decided to be quiet. He also added that the union officials are not covered under the same health insurance.

On the other hand, Organising Secretary aspirant Seth Kanyango urged the union to act swiftly and ensure teachers are given a good medical scheme with the sub-county implementation committee.

“I call on the government and the Teachers Service Commission to consider a plea by teachers over the medical cover scheme that has failed to serve us in the best possible conditions,” said Kanyango.
