Migori parents warned not to use flood excuse for not sending their kids to school

Parents have been asked to release their children for second term instead of keeping them at home under the pretext of floods caused by the heavy rains in some parts of the county.

Kuria West Sub-county Director of Education Robert Ongeri said that few schools in the sub county were affected by floods and the problem of renovating them has been solved.

Speaking to Education News on behalf of director at his Kehancha office, sub-county assistant director of education Francis Onyango said that of 47 and 17 public primary and secondary schools respectively in the sub county have resumed and only two schools lost latrines from the heavy rain.

He singled out Masangora Primary School whose 5 pit latrines sagged and collapsed while Nyaogutu Primary too lost 4 pit latrines but all of them have been repaired.

‘These were minor problems which have been fixed with the collaboration of our office and the Board of Management of the affected schools,” he said.

He assured the public that schools in the sub county opened on Monday 13 according to and assured of their children’s security whole they are at school.

He told parents to monitor the movement of their children from home to school by alerting them to be wary of the ever changing unpredictable weather conditions.

He advised teachers to encourage their pupils to come to school and go home in groups to enable them to keepers of their brothers in case of any danger.

He asked news reporter to stop being alarmist instead inform and educate the society.

“Although you do work try to tell your colleagues to avoid exaggerations and fabrications in their work, he said.

Education News established that many schools have resumed full classes by morning of Tuesday, May 14 including Excel Academy, Kehancha Progressive and Igena Primary and Junior Secondary School.

In the neighbouring Suna East Sub-county many schools including Migori Primary, Relief Academy and Musomi students have resumed learning vigorously.

Suna Suna East Sub-county Director of Education John Joseph Onyango thanked God because none of the schools in the area were affected by rains.

“We were not affected but that does imply that we do not feel for our friends from the rest of the country who even lost their loved ones and we wish them quick resilience,” he said.

He appealed to teachers and students to embrace team work which will enable them to recover the two weeks they were home.
