Migori DG lauds Kuria community for reduction in FGM cases

Migori County Deputy Governor Dr Joseph Mahiri.

Migori County Deputy Governor (DG) Dr Joseph Mahiri has lauded the Kuria community for the reduction in Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) practices in the area.

He attributed the improvement to join efforts by Nyumba Kumi groups, chiefs and their assistants towards sensitizing the residents on the negative effects of the practice.

The DG, who spoke at Kehancha town, said the county government under the leadership of Governor Ochillo Ayacko was keen on partnering with the national government to improve the quality of education for the girl child in the region.

“When we give learning opportunities to any child, we are investing in the future stability of the nation,” he said.

He revealed that since the beginning of this year, more than 3000 student from the region have benefitted from the Kenya Big Dream School Fees Support Programme.

The DG said the beneficiaries were picked fairly from the four sub-counties; Ntimaru, Kuria East, Mabera and Kuria West, and asked skeptics not to politicize the programme.

He asked the residents to embrace modern methods of livestock keeping to enable them fetch good money to educate their children instead of wholly depending on the government for bursaries.
