Migori County Deputy (DG) Joseph Mahiri has praised the Kuria Community for valuing education for their children rather than clinging to old, destructive traditions such as early marriages, which hinder their educational progress.

He attributed the transformation to the community’s elites, who have been running persistent community sensitisation programmes with the help of government agencies.

“These voluntary sons and daughters from the community have done an accommodating job for their community because they love it,” he said.

He was speaking at Getabwenga Ward in the county when he addressed parents from 14 Primary schools in the area.

He asked parents not to spend much on the upcoming Christmas festival, but to set aside some funds to support their children with basic learning materials when schools reopen in January.

He asked parents to prepare their children who have reached school-going age to take them to school instead of retaining them at home to take care of their flock of Sheep and cows.

The deputy governor said that the government is committed to providing education to all children and asked parents to feed, dress, and cushion their children with parental love to enable them to grow in confidence and assurance of success in life.

During the meeting on Sunday, December 21, 2025, Mahiri donated 15,000 pairs of Bata shoes to PP1 and PP2 pupils from the 14 Primary schools to help them enjoy their studies as they transition into the next grade next month.

He asked those who have in society to share with the less privileged amongst them.

The deputy governor gave assorted foodstuffs, including packets of wheat flour, cooking fat, and salt, to widows and families in the area to enable them to celebrate the Christmas festival.
