Migori County government has embarked on the construction of early childhood development education classrooms in public primary schools across the county.
The project of constructing 140 classrooms will cost the taxpayers Sh77 million and is expected to be completed in the next one month to help curb the shortage of ECDE classrooms in the area.
Learning for ECDE pupils in some areas has been taking place under trees.
The initiative was launched in all the 8 constituencies within the County by Migori Governor Dr. Ochilo Ayacko this week is in line with his campaign pledges of upgrading the sector.
Ochilo who spoke at Ragana primary school in Suna West noted that the children are the future of the nation and therefore deserve proper care.
“I am what I am today because my parents took me to school at a tender age to lay the foundation of what I am today.” Said Ochilo
He noted that the construction of the classrooms by the county government will help address the issue of congestion of learners as they have been spread across the county and every public primary school is expected to have at least an ECDE classroom.
“The learners are tomorrow’s leadership and therefore must be accorded proper social, moral and academic care to lay the foundation of what we wish them to have in future.” He added.
Governor Ochilo thanked electorates for braving the odds and electing him into office together with the area member of parliament Hon. Peter Masara among other leaders pledging to work together to enhance development not only in the education sector but in all fields for the betterment of living standards in the region as per their campaign pledges.
“My government is ready to work together with other leaders whom you elected to ensure the dreams of this great county are realized and that the education sector is strengthened and youths get empowered.” He said.
He also applauded members of the Migori county assembly for easing the process to implement county projects by passing the supplementary budget and the recent financial year 2023/24 budget.
He noted that the MCAs have greatly contributed towards the county projects’ implementation through constant consultations with the county executive officials in the departments.
Achilo called on locals to embrace peace and unity in order to provide a conducive environment for development.
He however challenged national leaders especially those in the national assembly to work towards upgrading the living standards of the people through policies that will gear towards the reduction of taxes to make life bearable for the citizens.
The County government through the Department of Education also distributed other learning materials such as textbooks, exercise books, tables and chairs for the learners in the ECDE.
Governor Ayacko was accompanied by his deputy Dr. Gimunta Mahiri, CECM education Dr. Betty Samburu, Chief Officer of education Prof. Rose Odhiambo, County Government Director of Education Edward Okello among other county officials and MCAs.
