Junior Secondary School (JSS) intern teachers serving in Meru County have announced plans to hold a peaceful protest on Friday, November 14, to demand confirmation to permanent and pensionable terms.

In a formal notice addressed to the Officer Commanding Station (OCS), Meru Police Station, and copied to relevant education and county offices, the teachers—under the umbrella of the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET), Meru Branch—said the demonstration will begin at 10:00 a.m. and run until 3:00 p.m.

According to the letter signed by Lewis Kithinji Abaas, Organizing Secretary for JSS KUPPET Meru, the protest will start at Nteere Park, where participants will gather for an opening prayer and briefing.

The procession will then move through Makutano Road to the TSC County Director’s Office, proceed along Meru–Maua Road to the Regional Director of Education’s Office, continue to the County Commissioner’s Office, and finally conclude at the Office of the Governor where a petition will be presented.

Abaas noted that the teachers are peacefully seeking government intervention to regularize the employment status of more than 20,000 JSS Science Interns who have served for months without confirmation.

The organizers have requested police protection to ensure order and security during the event.

The planned demonstration adds to growing pressure on the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) and the Ministry of Education to address concerns raised by JSS intern teachers across the country, who have decried what they describe as prolonged uncertainty over their employment terms.
