Meru Governor Isaac Mutuma has called for swift action against those linked to the destruction and looting of property that targeted Meru Muguka traders at Siakago Market in Embu County.
The unrest, which culminated in day-long clashes between traders and members of the Mbeere community, left stalls torched and businesses wiped out.
Speaking to displaced traders at Embu Town Muguka Market, Governor Mutuma called on the police to act decisively, saying no one should be shielded by ethnicity when it comes to the law.
He appealed for calm, reminding both communities of their history of peaceful coexistence, and pressed for investigations into boda boda theft rings without singling out any group.
Igembe North MP Julius Taitimu supported the governor’s remarks, warning against further provocation and promising to advocate for compensation for losses suffered.

Government response has included the deployment of a special probe team to Siakago.
Public Service, Human Capital Development, and Special Programmes CS Geoffrey Ruku told residents in Mbeere North that all those involved, including any public officials or police officers who may have contributed to the chaos, would be held accountable.
Ruku also criticised corruption within the police service, citing complaints that officers allegedly demanded small bribes, nicknamed “pen or writing material”, before aiding victims.
Meanwhile, some residents expressed frustration over unpaid deliveries by specific traders, a grievance they say worsened tensions.
The probe team is expected to begin work immediately in hopes of restoring security and trust in the area.
