Meru Boda boda riders call for sanity on roads as schools reopen

The Meru Boda boda riders association has called for sanity on the road following the opening of schools for third term studies.

The association chairman John Baraza urged riders to be extra careful and mindful of their lives and those they are ferrying especially the learners despite there being a rush to earn more money.

He called on their members to ensure they observe traffic rules in a bid to avoid unnecessary accidents.

“We face a lot of challenges during the back to school dates, traffic snare up and many travelers are on the wait. Let’s all be careful as we ferry our customers. My appeal to the riders is that they maintain law and order. We must restrain ourselves from carrying excess passengers. Let us strictly follow the traffic laws in order to avoid unnecessary accidents,” said Baraza.

He cautioned that there could be some criminals posing as boda boda riders, but on a mission to steal from unsuspecting customers.

“When there is a rush like this, some criminals may come out only to reap where they have not planted. Let parents guide students on where to pick boda bodas, and we encourage them to board from set stages” he said.

Nicholas Mugambi Ngaku, the association secretary general, on his side called for respect to the learners urging their members not to overcharge on transport.

“Let’s respect these young ones, we don’t want to hear that anyone of us has been arrested over sexual harassment or other issues. Let’s maintain our morals” he challenged the riders.

On savings, Mugambi called on non Sacco members to join the organised groups so as to benefit from the government and also grow.

Meanwhile, the secretary general also urged riders to take advantage of support from the government so as to secure a better future.

“The government is empowering us, we need to take advantage and strengthen our finances. This will only be possible through coming up in an organised group” said Mugambi.

He also called upon their members to seek licenses and necessary documents including passports, so as to secure jobs even in the diaspora.

“There are many jobs out there even in other countries. But some of us have in the past lost opportunities for lack of simple documents like passports or driving licenses. We need to rethink” he summed.
